First Table Reading

A cold reading of a theatre manuscript allows the writer to hear the book and lyrics before any staging is considered. In March 2017, a group of second year musical theatre students from the Australian Institute of Music, Melbourne Campus, came together for the first table reading of the book and lyrics of iMPERFECT messiah. By then, it would have been something like the 20th edition of the libretto that was being read.

The written work was received warmly by the young musical enthusiasts and a lively discussion followed. Topics spanned from song lyrics to music styles to the relevance of Biblical references made in the libretto. Also in attendance was one of the senior artist-leaders of a Melbourne-based Christian drama organisation. The feedback she shared was equally encouraging.

After the reading, the libretto underwent significant revisions.
