By April 2019, there were 15 songs that had not yet been finalised and notated for piano and voice. Beth as librettist and Sean as lead composer had hoped to hold a concert showcase of the libretto and score by the end of the year. In order to have the work ready in time for the target concert, a period of intensive music composition seemed like the only recourse.
The idea was that the writer, composer, arranger and a notator were to isolate themselves from the regular churning of Melbourne life for 60 hours, at most, to complete the task. A crowdfund campaign was set up to help cover the cost of this Intensive.
The 15 songs were indeed finalised and notated but organising the intended theatre-concert turned out to be a logistical nightmare. In addition, there were no funds to support production.
And then, the pandemic came and changed life, as we knew it.
